By Egemen Savaskan, Dan Georgescu, Franziska Zúñiga Pioneering recommendations for interprofessional evidence-based measures In addition to cognitive impairments, many people suffering from dementia also develop psychiatric symptoms, which are summarized under the umbrella term BPSD. Behavioral and psychological symptoms may result from functional changes associated with dementia: Reduced inhibition of inappropriate behaviors (e.g. undressing in public places), Depression, affectability, irritability, psychotic symptoms (e.g. delusion, hallucinations), psychomotor symptoms (e.g. urge to move, agitation, aggressiveness, apathy). vegetative and circadian disorders, which often manifest as daytime sleepiness combined with nightly restlessness. The increasing need for support is also an enormous burden for caregivers. These recommendations are the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration and should help to understand and deal with the variety of symptoms and therapy approaches. The focus is on diagnostics and therapy, with a focus on non-pharmacological approaches. The manual thus provides a comprehensive insight into the evidence-based intervention options for a highly complex and vulnerable patient group. It serves as a valuable tool for professionals from various fields to present the current state of treatment of behavioral and mental symptoms in dementia and to promote interprofessional collaboration and improve the care of the elderly with mental illness.
