Quesnelle (ed.), Kathryn N. Huggett (ed.) Many health science educators are placed into leadership roles with very little training or preparation. The goal of this manual is to provide introductory-level guidance for health science educators who are new to leadership roles or considering one, from IAMSE members who have successfully navigated these roles around the globe. This manual would be useful for individuals who are considering leadership at the Dean, Chair, Director, or committee level. The manual will use first person voice to present leadership topics in a way that feels approachable and easy-to-read, but the chapters will contain appropriate references so that readers have the resources to dig deeper into each topic. After reading this manual, the reader will have a better sense of different leadership styles, development opportunities, and career strategies that are specific to leaders in the health sciences. This manual will focus on development for the types of leadership positions that IAMSE members are most likely to undertake provide stories of leadership from across the health professions, and this is what makes the manual so unique. While there are many books about general leadership or education, very few works are specifically targeted to new or aspiring leaders in health professions education. Journal articles that focus on leadership in healthcare education are very popular, with one such example from 2020 having over 80 citations and 71,000 accesses (van Diggele et al., Leadership in Healthcare Education, BMC Medical Education, 2020. PMID 33272264). The confirmed authors of this volume are all practicing leaders at the different levels we hope to reach through our readership. Some authors hold high-ranking positions such as Senior Associate Dean, while others specialize in more programmatic leadership. In keeping with the spirit and mission of IAMSE, we have assembled this list of authors from an international candidate pool, and we are proud of the diversity represented by our final authorship list. And, despite its having expanded access through such programs as Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, and the Affordable Care Act, nearly 20 million Americans still do not have health insurance. Worse, efforts by the Republican Party to dismantle the ACA and increases in premiums could leave millions more without the financial means to afford treatment when needed. Countries that guarantee health coverage to all their citizens have done so recognizing the health of the nation is dependent on the health of their people. This has not occurred in the United States, not only because powerful forces have mounted a vast campaign against it, but also because no plan with clear solutions and guidelines has yet emerged. Starting from the premise that health care is a societal responsibility, David Colton's The Case for Universal Health Care contends that universal health care should not only be guaranteed by the government, it should be organized and administered by a federal agency and funded through a new, health care transaction tax. This will ensure that the national health care program is focused on quality and is fiscally sustainable for current and future generations of Americans, ridding it from cost over-runs and service denials due to the search for profitability. Colton provides a clear understanding of each facet of the present, flawed health care system: how it is structured and organized; how we pay for health care; what factors influence access, quality, and affordability; and contrasts it with approaches taken by countries providing universal coverage. Thus prepared, the reader is taken through an in depth explanation of Colton's proposed alternative approach to universal health care, including a description of how an American national health care program would be organized, what treatments would be covered, and how it would be funded. The role of quality improvement, utilization review, and evidence-based medicine in controlling costs is examined as is the economic and moral case for universal coverage. The cost of providing care in the United States will soon be unsustainable. It surely makes sense to consider an option that ensures health care is accessible to all its citizens and is fully funded regardless of vicissitudes in the national economy. In this detailed ethnographic study of the hip fracture trajectory, Beyond Patient Pathways challenges the dominant rational-linear logic of care pathways to reveal the complex, evolving assemblages that underpin everyday service delivery. The book traces how coordination is accomplished within and across diverse settings - from the control centre and ambulance services, through the emergency department, hospital ward, and operating theatres, to community-based care. The first ever study to examine the organisation of end-to-end processes in real time, it offers unique insights into the changing shape of patient trajectories. Anchored in classic sociological ideas on patient trajectories and informed by Translation Mobilisation Theory, Beyond Patient Pathways reframes patient-centred care not as a fixed ideal, but as something enacted through shifting concerns, technologies, and institutional arrangements. It brings to light the diversity of ways in which care is organised, including the often-invisible work that sustains coordination across time and settings. In doing so, it offers not only a powerful conceptual lens but also a methodological foundation for studying care trajectories in ways that are sensitive to the relational intricacies and dynamic configurations of care work. The complexity of care systems is increasingly acknowledged, but they are difficult to study systematically. This book provides both the empirical grounding and the theoretical tools needed to do so - making it an essential resource for a wide readership of researchers, medical sociologists, service managers, improvement scientists, and healthcare professionals with an interest in health services management, quality improvement, person-centred care, care planning and interprofessional education.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Medical Administration","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":48958836867246,"sku":null,"price":27.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0765\/8179\/8062\/files\/9781032756530.jpg?v=1787943430"},{"product_id":"community-care","title":"Community Care","description":"\u003cp\u003eby Sheila Sharkey (ed.), Sara Barna (ed.) As the reach and influence of technology grow, the world becomes increasingly connected. What happens in one system—finance, manufacturing, research, infrastructure, supply chain, and many more—can have a significant impact on the activities and outcomes in other systems. Healthcare is no exception. Connecting all of these systems is vital in order to properly support clinical care. Health informatics has the potential to align these interlocking systems in a way that transforms clinical decision-making and healthcare delivery to optimize overall system performance. Health Informatics: A Systems Perspective takes a systems approach to leveraging information in healthcare and enhancing providers’ capabilities through the use of technology and knowledge transfer. The book offers a conceptual framework for aligning clinical decision processes with system infrastructures, including information technology, organizational design, financing, and evaluation. The book’s contributors—all leading academics and healthcare practitioners—balance theoretical viewpoints with practical considerations. Case studies and informative sidebars support theory with real-world applications, while learning objectives, key concepts, and discussion questions facilitate learning and reinforce content. A glossary, which defines the main concepts and key terminologies presented in the text, provides a useful overview of the material. In recent years, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has called on medical schools to educate and train more doctors to meet a predicted physician shortage across all specialties. Finite resources at most medical college campuses, coupled with the call to train more health professionals, has resulted in an increasing number of schools developing regional campuses to help meet this need. The authors show that recent developments of curricula for postgraduate doctors have been founded on the misguided view (promoted by politicians and policy makers) that medical practice is routine, straightforward and able to be reduced to simple protocols that professionals must learn and follow. This comprehensive resource covers leadership, operations, financial and facilities management, and other chief administrative responsibilities to help readers better understand the athletic director’s multifaceted role. NIAAA’s Guide to Interscholastic Athletic Administration was developed under the direction of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA), the trusted authority for excellence in administration of high school sports. This guidebook features the best practices in high school athletic administration to assist both aspiring and practicing athletic directors in meeting the demands of the job. General guidelines and background knowledge are complemented by specific strategies and techniques. Each chapter offers examples of how to solve common problems, and sidebars highlight creative solutions employed by exemplary high school athletic directors. This text features guidance and multidisciplinary information on handling some of the toughest parts of the job. A chapter on personnel management discusses mentoring and evaluation systems to assist with the growth and development of staff, and a technology chapter offers specific recommendations of tools to help athletic directors operate more effectively and efficiently. A chapter on legal and safety concerns outlines concrete measures that administrators can take to prevent mishaps and protect their schools and staff from liability. Readers will also learn how to manage a budget and find creative alternatives to get the most out of available funds. Based on extensive research conducted by the editors, this text confronts several challenges facing contemporary high school sport administrators: • Providing comprehensive professional preparation for athletic director candidates and continuing education for today’s athletic directors • Aligning the goals of education-based athletic programs and the conduct of coaches, athletes, and parents engaged in the program to the educational mission of the school, district, state, and national governing organizations • Ensuring ongoing education in vital areas including student citizenship, staff support, safety, risk management, and budget preparation • Making consistent efforts to provide equitable opportunities for participation and accommodate the abilities and interests of all student-athletes The position of interscholastic athletic administrator is rapidly becoming one of the most challenging positions in any school as these professionals are asked to do more with less. Given proper education, tools, and goals, NIAAA recognizes the pivotal role an athletic administrator can have in enriching the school culture and experiences of participating athletes, parents, and coaches. NIAAA’s Guide to Interscholastic Athletic Administration provides fundamental knowledge guided by sound educational practices to enable athletic administrators to execute their daily duties with competence and confidence. The discussion of the therapeutic function is timely given the rising complexities in our world, and the increasing awareness of emotional impacts of human service work. These impacts include stress, distress, emotional labour, indirect trauma, and direct trauma. Posing a challenge and invitation to supervisors to comfortably inhabit the therapeutic function of supervision to increase emotional support to workers, it places safe practice and worker wellbeing at the heart of supervision to enable high quality service delivery for often the most vulnerable in society. While underpinned by theory, it is written to be practically applied and is developed from a ‘lived experience’ perspective, offering a unique glimpse into actual practice. By modelling one of the main aims of professional supervision, which is to facilitate and enable the integration of experience into learning and knowledge, it will be of interest to all practitioners across a broad range of human services, particularly both new and experienced supervisors.
